Rose that is caitlin

Today’s painting is Caitlin Rose, one of my favorite new musicians. Here’s wishing I could see her perform in Texas again while I’m there in June!

Those are blueberries. Painting a picture every day means that I can paint something on a whim if I want. So I painted blueberries.

When I found out I was pregnant, the embryo was just the size of a blueberry. So, that’s what I called her for 7 months – it just stuck. The week she was due, I wrote on the calendar in giant letters, “Blueberry’s Birth Week!”

Then she was born, and I called her by her name. I don’t think I ever called her blueberry again. Weird how some nicknames stick and others just don’t, even if you want them to.

Some kind of inspiration

I feel like today’s painting needs one of those demotivational lines. You know, like this poster for example.

It’s just such a pretty painting. It makes me want to take a deep breath and think of some silly, emotional thing to say about it. Maybe I should write some words on my hand with a sharpie and hold it in front of my painting. I could write something like “Alone, but not Lonely.” How about, “Be Original”, or “Dare to Dream?”

I’ll leave the stupid phrases out and let us all enjoy the sunset. Instead, I’ll tell you a story. I lived on the edge of the Nicoya Peninsula for a couple months. I took care of wild animals during the day and sang songs around a fire at night. One particular friend was the best damned fisher I’d ever seen. He would stand for hours, motionless, in a stream, holding a fishing line with a ball of bread on a tiny hook. When he caught enough tiny fish, he’d move to another part of the stream and use the tiny fish to catch big fish that we could eat. I tried it. I sucked ass.

When my husband and I went back to the U.S. (all tan and fit, I might add), he continued traveling all over Central and South America. I guess he finally made it back home to The Netherlands. When he’s not working or fishing, he’s taking photos of everything that’s lovely. This was one of his photos. And it inspired me, so I painted it.

That sweet spot

I’m just having some fun. This is a painting of the bungalow that my man and I stayed in for two months while working at a wildlife reservation in Costa Rica. It was a dream come true and I’ll never forget the exotic sweetness of it all.

It turns out that babies are cuter than computers! She’ll be 6 months soon and she’s a jewel. I continued to paint, but my blog took a hiatus for awhile.

Now I’m back to work! Thanks for hanging with me and being patient.

I just finished a large commission piece. It’s cherry blossoms on three 5 ft panels. I’ve had a blast working on them even if I had to do it at my in-laws because I’m leaving the country next week, and even though I cut my foot on the edge of a canvas because there was barely room for all 4 of us.

I can’t wait to see these in their new gorgeous home! Many thanks to the Juvenile
Diabetes Research Foundation of Houston
for asking me to be a part of such a great cause. Enjoy the progress shots.
